We offer GMC approved training in Stage 1, Stage 2 and Stage 3 (Advanced) Intensive Care Medicine
The RVI is a Major Trauma Centre and a Regional Burns Unit allowing us to provide modules in Trauma and Stabilisation and Neuro Intensive Care as part of the Intensive Care Medicine Curriculum.
The Freeman is home to the Institute of Transplantation and also specialises in complex major surgery, complex interventional radiology, complex cardiothoracics and is the regional centre for ENT, vascular, urology and hepatic-biliary surgery including pancreatitis.
Across the city, experience can be gained in the following areas of Intensive Care Medicine: General Medical, Surgical, Trauma, Burns, Plastics, Neurosciences, Obstetrics, Home Ventilation, Transplantation, Haematology, Oncology, Infectious Diseases, Renal and Cardiothoracics.
We can offer Mentors and Supervisors in Focused Intensive Care Echo (FICE), and Critical Care Ultrasound (CUSIC) and hope to create fellowships for future trainees in point of care ultrasound (POCUS)
The RVI currently has a post CCT Fellow in home ventilation
Weekly interruption free ICU teaching is provided, as is Journal club, regular radiology teaching and meetings, and Morbidity and Mortality meetings
There is a developing In-situ Simulation Training Programme in addition to Simulation Suites at Freeman and RVI, and a new Education centre at the RVI.
The department is actively involved in Research and Quality Improvement providing opportunities for trainees within these areas
We are currently enrolling patients into the REST trail, PEPTIC trial, 65 Trial, and Energise Trial to name a few.
