Students in Healthcare
Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals are committed to education and assist in the teaching of large numbers of students within healthcare.
Medical students (Student Doctors)
Medical students are tomorrows doctors, and are frequently learning medicine in critical care. Students training in Newcastle University Medical School and other international students are often present in critical care to learn about our practice.
Undergraduate medical students typically complete a 5 year training degree before final examinations, and then enter Foundation Doctor training for 2 years. They typically learn about critical illness and therapies during their 4th or 5th years of training.
Medical students are with us to learn and will typically work with the medical team in learning to provide excellent healthcare. They will always be supervised as appropriate, and are directly accountable to the Consultant in charge and the medical school.
Students benefit greatly from talking to and examining patients on our units. We are grateful for your time in supporting their learning journey.
More information about Newcastle University medical students who have an interest in critical care can be found here.
Nursing students (Student Nurses)
Nursing students complete blocks of supervised training within critical care. They will often be in their 2nd or 3rd year of a 3 year nursing degree. Nursing students will typically work with a senior nurse who will act as their mentor during placements.
A student nurse is present to learn about personal health and social care. They can do many things to help patients, but are not allowed to administer medications etc, until the very final stages of their training. They will often assist senior nurses under direct supervision.
Nursing Students will usually be training in Northumbria University School of Nursing, or Sunderland School of Nursing. In addition, we welcome other international students from around the globe.
