Nutrition On Critical Care

Dietitians are an integral part of the ICU multidisciplinary team where their specialist skills are essential in the management of patients with complex nutritional needs.

Dietitians will complete a thorough assessment of an individual’s background and nutritional status in order to develop a tailored nutritional plan, including recommendations for the most appropriate route of providing nutrition (this can be by oral intake, tube feeding or intravenous feeding).  Patients will be regularly reviewed to ensure they are receiving optimal nutrition throughout their critical illness and during recovery.

In order to maintain best practise, the critical care dietetic team work closely as part of a working group across the hospital sites. Critical care dietitians liaise closely with colleagues working in other specialities to ensure seamless nutritional care following transfer.
